Tax Deduction for Wigs

How to File

Sales tax is required on all wigs, except for orders shipped out of New York State. You may file for a tax deduction if you purchase a wig for a medical reason such as chemo or alopecia. Sales tax for a cosmetic wig is not deductible.

1. Complete this form: NYS Depart. of Taxation website
2. Paid receipt showing the tax you paid for the wig
3. Rx from your doctor describing the specific medical problem that resulted in the need for a medical hair prosthesis

Medicare patients may be eligible for a tax deduction on the cost of your wig. Limits may apply.
